Original poem by Dr R. Gilbert
Dr Gilbert was a Physician and Surgeon in Tarnagulla who succeeded Dr. Green in October 1886 but was forced to retire owing to ill health in March 1889.
He practiced from his residence which he had purchased from Dr Green along with his horse and buggy.
Although there is a reference to a “sublime oration delivered by Dr Gilbert in the Victoria Theatre in November 1887”, this could not be located in The Tarnagulla & Llanelly Courier. It is believed this poem may have been part of that Oration.
